全球電力需求預計到2050年將翻倍，因為世界對化石燃料的依賴正在減少。根據DNV的新能源系統報告，實現去碳化能源系統需要顯著擴展電網、解決電網壅塞問題以及採用新商業模式以因應日益增加的電力需求和來自風能與太陽能的發電量。報告還得出結論，由於電網技術效率的提高和電力負載的增加，電網擴展不會造成過大經濟壓力，DNV預測，隨著時間的推移，全球電網費用轉嫁給最終消費者的成本將不會顯著增加，甚至可能會減少。
