VSC HVDC technology and HVDC power cables training course (online)

This training course provides a high-level introduction to VSC HVDC technology and HVDC power cables in condensed form for those with limited available time.

Contents:
Most electrical power transmission involves a 3-phase HVAC system. The reasons for choosing HVDC technology, and particularly VSC HVDC, rather than HVAC in a specific case are complex. Through this modular HVDC training course, DNV is addressing the need to increase knowledge and understanding of this subject.

The first part starts with an introduction to HVDC technology, including an overview of the various types of HVDC technologies and why VSC HVDC is increasingly being applied in power systems. VSC HVDC converter technology and its applications are explained, followed by system and equipment issues based on practical project examples.

The second part on HVDC power cables starts with the main technical considerations for selecting HVDC or HVAC cables. This is followed by an overview of the main design parameters and technical aspects of HVDC cable systems, highlighting the key differences compared to their HVAC counterparts, presented through both theoretical perspectives and practical examples.

Subjects:
•    Basics of VSC HVDC technology
•    Aspects of the VSC HVDC system
•    Equipment aspects of VSC HVDC systems
•    Introduction to HVDC cables: technical and economic considerations, and HVDC cable        market developments
•    HVDC cable system design, materials and accessories

Target audience:
The course is intended for employees of TSOs, engineering and construction companies and manufacturers, but may also be of interest to wind project developers, consultants, managers and others who require knowledge about the building blocks of HVDC. A background in electrical power engineering is required.

Outcome:
Through this course, participants gain a high-level understanding of the various building blocks, types of HVDC system technologies and their typical applications, and the critical aspects to ensure the quality of your HVDC projects. You will understand how VSC HVDC and HVDC cable systems are developed, and what further developments can be expected in the future.

On request, DNV can also provide in-company training (content, location and duration can be adapted to your specific requirements). Please contact us for more information.
