Port State Control (PSC) is becoming more and more active and PSC regimes will continue to take measures to ensure that ships are in compliance with international requirements related to safety, pollution prevention and manning conditions on board.
This online course provides practical guidance on all aspects of PSC and will support trainees individually in preparing for and managing PSC inspections.
The 4 course modules focus on:
- the foundations of PSC, such as the basic regulations, the regional agreements, the selection of ships, and the inspection processes.
- how to prepare for PSC inspections, by complying with international standards, creating a good first impression, reporting defects, and implementing the ISM system properly.
- how to deal with cultural differences, what are the different types of inspections, and what are the top 18 deficiencies that can lead to detention
- how to follow up on PSC inspections, forms of reporting, and how personal behaviour may influence the situation during a PSC inspection on board.
Each module has an average duration of about 30 minutes for a total of about 2 hours of training. The exact duration will depend on the personal learning speed of the individual and the previous level of knowledge about PSC.
Each module includes some questions for the learner to reflect on the learned content. The content includes short animations as well as interactive exercises (e.g. sorting activities, drag & drop, click animations). In module 4, a scenario is included. A scenario is a description of a situation, where the learner may select between two or more options. Depending on the chosen answer, the learner will receive a different feedback about the described situation.
This course is designed to adapt to the screen formats of common devices, i.e. it can also be completed on mobile devices.
