How does power supply work?

Get an easy-to-understand insight into the essential topics of electrical energy supply

Electricity is an omnipresent companion that we use or need almost always and everywhere. But we only really notice it when it's suddenly missing. But very few people know why the flow of energy works so smoothly, what tasks a network operator has and what challenges we face with the energy transition with our power grid.

With this training, participants gain an easy-to-understand insight into the essential topics of electrical energy supply. This topic, which affects us all, becomes accessible to a broader group of people than just professional groups from the electrical engineering field. We attach particular importance to the understandable communication of sometimes complex causal relationships.

The one-day training also covers the latest developments in the legal, market and technical environment. We give you a structured insight from the perspective of an independent service provider in the energy industry.

Goals

  • Understand the basic physics and know why energy is transferred this way and why the energy supply system developed as we know it today
  • Understand the structure of the networks and know the most important actors
  • Understand the power supply “tools” that keep the system running (e.g. “redispatch”)
  • Be able to understand and classify current news from the energy industry.

Methodology

Lecture, discussion, knowledge quiz, playful, low-threshold knowledge control.

Content

  • Basics of electrical engineering (including current, voltage, active and reactive power, frequency, etc.)
  • Structure of the networks in Germany, voltage levels, network structures, network operators
  • The most important topics of network and system management: including frequency maintenance, voltage maintenance, control power, redispatch, feed-in management
  • Challenges caused by the energy transition
  • Composition of the electricity price
  • Optional: introduction to the dispatcher training simulator.

Target group (recommendation)

  • All employees of energy suppliers who do not work in electrical engineering areas (e.g. customer management, accounting, human resources, construction technology, etc.)
  • Managers, employees or trainees who need knowledge and connections to power supply for their professional activities
  • Politicians, MPs or parliamentary group employees who need a structured insight into the electricity supply in Germany
  • Anyone who has always wanted to know how the electricity supply works in Germany.

Participants

At least 6 to a maximum of 12.
