WHITEPAPER

Computing natural gas losses from damaged pipelines using analytical discharge equations and network modeling software

Are you confident that the methods you are using to measure lost gas are sufficiently accurate?

Abstract

It is critically important to be able to measure the volume of gas lost from pipe damage due to digging incidents. It is crucial from a financial perspective as well as an environmental one, and particularly in the protection of a company’s reputation. Are you confident that the methods you are using to measure lost gas are sufficiently accurate?

Assessing the discharged volume during third-party digging damages with efficiency and acceptable accuracy is a challenge for multiple reasons. It involves complex physics phenomena, requires taking the right assumptions and has to perform relatively quickly as the number of cases to compute each year is important. This paper summarizes the application of a comprehensive methodology used to perform this vital task.

The paper also provides laboratory studies that validate the results computed by the hydraulic modeling software Synergi Gas.
