Wind measurements with LiDAR

Innovative technology that complements and extends traditional measurement approaches

For the long-term financial success of a wind farm, reliable and accurate wind and energy production assessment it is essential. With the advance of the LiDAR technology, this alternative to the traditional met. mast is rapidly becoming the industry standard for wind resource measurements. Whether conducting energy production studies or evaluating the power curve in operating wind farms, LiDAR offers a reliable and precise solution.

How does LiDAR work?

LiDAR is an innovative technology that measures the meteorological conditions at a potential wind farm site using optical (laser) signals. The ground-based device sends out laser pulses that are backscattered by molecules and aerosol particles in the measurement volume. The backscattered laser light is then detected and evaluated, using the Doppler shift to calculate the horizontal wind speed and direction at each programmed measurement height.

The use of LiDAR is rapidly gaining popularity, but there are still challenges that must be addressed to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the measurement campaign. For example, proper attention is required during the setup and monitoring stages  of the campaign to assure a high quality database. Critical steps such as performance validation, site selection and the installation on site, should also be handled by an experienced team.

When using LiDAR for power curve verification, it is essential to comply with key requirements outlined in IEC 61400-12-1 (2017) to ensure an accredited campaign

DNV offers a wide range of services including:

  • Measurement campaigns designed to evaluate the suitability of LiDAR deployment and optimize measurement locations.
  • Turnkey LiDAR measurement campaigns, including installation, commissioning, operation, maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Measurement campaigns conducted with DNV’s owned device or external LiDAR device.
  • Verification of the LiDAR before and/or after the measurement against an IEC 61400-12-1 compliant met mast.
  • Wind and energy production assessment, including the evaluation of all measured data (with uncertainties, P50/ P90-values, etc).
  • Access measured data and resource statistics via our online data management portal.
  • Full IEC-compliant measurement campaigns for power curve verification using LiDAR systems, from design to final reporting. As an accredited body by ENAC and Measnet, DNV ensures that all procedures and deliverables meet international standards and industry best practices.
