Environmental impact and risk modelling

DNV applies advanced knowledge and modelling software to predict environmental impacts and risks, and explore solutions

The offshore industries face challenges concerning the potential impact of acute and regular discharges to the marine environment during development and operations. Evaluating these impacts is complex and requires specialist expertise, advanced models, and high-quality input data.

DNV applies state-of-the-art numerical models to calculate the dispersion of acute and regular discharges to the marine environment. These calculations form the basis for impact modelling, environmental risk assessment, and evaluation of mitigating measures like oil spill preparedness.

Using our extensive experience and risk-based approach, we can help you select appropriate spill scenarios for further assessment. We carry out stochastic and single scenario oil spill modelling, for offshore, coastal and ice-covered waters using OSCAR – a state of the art 3D modelling system that calculates and records the distribution of oil on the water surface, on shorelines, in the water column, and in sediments. This system can also model response options to support cost-effective contingency planning.

We perform dispersion modelling of operational discharges, such as produced water (including chemicals) and drill cuttings, using DREAM (Dose-related Risk and Effects Assessment Model); the results are visualized and communicated using geographic information systems (GIS). We have also recently invested in capabilities for real-time monitoring and simulation of cuttings releases in sensitive areas.

DNV also provides statistical oil spill response viability modelling for offshore and shoreline spill response systems and measures; investigating when, where and how oil spill response operations are limited or ineffective due to rough weather, high sea-states, poor visibility or ice conditions. Oil spill response viability analysis is useful for both spill response planning using historical metocean data (hindcast), and as an operational planning tool using forecast data.

Our environmental impact and risk modelling service includes:

  • Modelling the transport and fate of potential accidental oil spills, including effects of contingency
  • Modelling of environmental impacts and risks from accidental oil spills or leakages
  • Advanced dispersion modelling of regular discharges for produced water or cooling water (including chemicals), and drill cuttings
  • Statistical response gap modelling, including visualizing in GIS dashboards and web GIS
  • Modelling of subsea gas releases like CO2 or methane, and assessing environmental impacts.
