In this position paper, we evaluate the current sea lice situation, focusing on regulations, reporting protocols, and monitoring and management methods. Considering the existing limitations and challenges, we explore the potential of AI-enabled automated sea lice counters. We identify the most pressing trust gaps associated with this technology and present DNV’s stepwise approach to building the necessary trust to realize its potential. We argue that adopting appropriately assured and trusted AI-based counters could improve sea lice management while enhancing data sharing between farmers and regulators. Ultimately, this could result in more efficient and less invasive sea lice management, improved fish welfare, and increased transparency and trust in salmon aquaculture.
