Lighting has long been a staple of energy efficiency programs, providing a low cost and effort means to reduce energy consumption for homes and businesses. However, the widespread availability and adoption of LEDs has eroded this savings potential. DNV undertook this study along with 11 leading program administrators from North America to discover possible hidden value in lighting system design. The result was six separate “next generation” commercial lighting opportunities that are most likely to produce significant program savings or are gaining traction in the market.

Managing energy demand is crucial for the energy transition, and DNV is a trusted leader for American utilities seeking cost-effective ways to scale up energy efficiency programs. In 2024, our experts processed over 100,000 applications for energy efficiency incentive programs, evaluated nearly $1 billion in energy program spending, and helped utility customers obtain more than $365 million in rebates.
