Automation of non-destructive testing process

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is a testing and analysis technique used by industry to evaluate the properties of a material, component, or structure without damage to the original part. This paper provides an update on DNV’s efforts on digitization of NDT methods.

NDT is essential for many industries to ensure reliability and to prevent accidents, including shipbuilding, oil and gas, aerospace and in additive manufacturing (AM).

In recent years NDT methods and measurement data have become increasingly digital. There is a growing trend for automated diagnosis, which means that an operator can carry out their own tests straight away. Compared to traditional NDT tools, automated diagnosis tools allow operators to take full advantage of inspection time to obtain results and make decisions, even by personnel who are not experts.

This paper provides an update on DNV’s efforts on digitization of NDT methods. Our aim is to increase asset safety efficienctly while reducing cost utilizing Artificial Intelligence methods. It covers:

  1. Introduction to Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)
  2. Techniques to Drive Automation of Non-Destructive Testing Process
  3. Define the Framework of Automated Non-Destructive Testing System
  4. Automated Solution for Weld Flaw Inspection
  5. Case Study: NDT.ai
  6. Summary and Future Work
