DNV-RP-J201 Qualification procedures for carbon dioxide capture technology

Recommended practice

Edition 2019-09 - Amended 2021-09

The objective of this recommended practice (RP) is to provide a systematic approach for the qualification of fossil fuel power generation technologies with CO2 capture.

The scope of this RP is to provide a supplement to DNV’s generic qualification procedures for new technology, DNV-RP-A203, by giving guidance for how to utilize these procedures for fossil fuel power generation technologies with CO2 capture.

The RP is applicable for components, equipment, processes, and process systems (assemblies) that can be defined as new CO2 capture technology or concepts. The procedure covers, but is not limited to, the three main concepts for capturing CO2 from power generation processes based on fossil fuels:

  • Post combustion; the CO2 is removed from the power plant flue gas after the combustion process.
  • Pre combustion; the CO2 is captured before combusting the hydrogen-rich fuel.
  • Oxy-fuel combustion; the fuel is combusted using almost pure oxygen at near stoichiometric conditions producing a flue gas consisting mainly of CO2 and H2O.
