HullPIC conference – Next generation hull performance management

Hull performance monitoring solutions offer significant fuel savings potential, a fact that is prompting growing interest from the maritime industry. To spur development and increase awareness of this exciting field DNV GL and paint manufacturer Jotun have created the Hull Performance & Insight Conference (HullPIC). The conference will take place for the first time this year in Castello di Pavone/Italy from 13-15 April and will examine standards for hull and propeller performance as well as the common challenges and solutions that can help shipowners realize potential fuel savings.

“It is a great opportunity for industry stakeholders to come together to share operational experiences and discuss common challenges within hull performance and performance monitoring, and we are very pleased to be part of it,” says Geir Axel Oftedahl, Director of Business Development at Jotun.

“Participants will also have the opportunity to look ahead at the innovations we can expect in the next few years, including the possibility of using robots to carry out hull surveys for example,” adds Volker Bertram, Senior Project Manager for Technology, Knowledge and Governance at DNV GL – Maritime. Using robots to conduct surveys could give owners more detailed feedback on hull conditions, making it much easier to assess the return on investment of different optimization measures.

Highlights from the conference include the following presentations:

  • ISO 19030: Why the standard is needed, what it covers and how it has been developed
  • Insights from a joint industry project on hull performance monitoring for container ships
  • White, grey and black box modelling in ship performance evaluation and prediction
  • Cooperative robotics: Technology for future underwater cleaning
  • Computing hull & propeller performance: Ship model alternatives and data acquisition methods
