DNV supports Statnett with the assessment of HVDC platform solutions for hybrid grid connections

DNV has been commissioned by Statnett to conduct a study of different design solutions for offshore high-voltage direct current (HVDC) platforms to enable the realization of hybrid grid connections. This study will be part of Statnett’s investigation of potential hybrid grid connections for offshore wind production in the Southwest F area in the North Sea – an investigation that Statnett has been tasked with by The Norwegian Ministry of Energy.

As the world's leading resource of independent energy experts and technical advisors, DNV has extensive experience with novel technologies and technology qualification in HVDC and offshore substation design. The study on HVDC platforms will deliver technical knowledge and insights to Statnett and thereby support their evaluation of various technical concepts and prerequisites for developing a cost-effective grid solution. In addition, by exploring opportunities for hybrid grid connections with different HVDC voltages, capacities, and configurations, the study will provide valuable insights into new and previously untested technologies.

DNV’s assessment of platform solutions includes:

  • Technical description, evaluation, and comparison of existing and planned platform solutions
  • Assessment of opportunities for alternative current (AC) expansion from HVDC platform for consumption
  • Examination of technology maturity, technology readiness level (TRL) and need for technology development

For this study, DNV will leverage its vast expertise within offshore wind, offshore power grids and offshore oil & gas, as well as years of experience from leading multiple joint industry projects and pre-feasibility studies.

“We are pleased to support Statnett in their efforts to enable grid integration of offshore wind and offshore electrification. This important work ties directly into the overall energy transition and efforts towards reaching net zero climate targets in Norway and the surrounding region,” says Prajeev Rasiah, Executive Vice President & Regional Director of Energy Systems Northern Europe, DNV. “At DNV, we’re proud to contribute to the energy transition and we look forward to utilizing our knowledge and expertise to support Statnett in their investigation of hybrid offshore grids.”

Background of the study

In connection with the announcement of new offshore wind areas in 2025, Statnett was commissioned by The Norwegian Ministry of Energy to investigate potential hybrid grid solutions for offshore wind production in the Sørvest F area in the North Sea.

Pending the Norwegian Government's decision on production capacity and grid solution for the Sørvest F 2025-tender and future tenders, one or more hybrid connections may be considered for realization. If such solutions were to be chosen and approved by the Norwegian Government, it is expected that Statnett will build and own hybrid interconnectors for offshore wind power. Statnett has previously been given system operator and planning authority for the offshore grid.

As part of this project, Statnett is focused on expanding its knowledge base, particularly within design solutions for offshore platforms for various hybrid grid solutions.

DNV is recognized in the technology qualification of novel technologies such as HVDC cables, HVDC circuit breakers and HVDC gas insulated switchgear. As an independent advisor, DNV has taken a leading role in organizing industry workshops, joint industry projects and managing diverse stakeholders.
