DNV celebrates 50 Years in Brazil

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 11 April 2024 - DNV, independent assurance and risk management provider, is celebrating 50 years of operations in Brazil. Since opening its first office in the country in 1974, DNV has grown to become a trusted partner to several industries in Brazil, including shipping, energy, food and beverage and more.

DNV arrived in Brazil following the discovery of oil in the Campos basin.  DNV’s certification services ensured safety was at the heart of the growth of the country’s offshore operations. In 1985, the company classed the two largest ore carriers ever built in the country. Two years later, DNV became one of the first companies to certify corporations’ quality and environmental processes when ISO-9000 standards were introduced. In 2000, DNV acquired Principia, a leading Brazilian risk management company, and in 2002, the company began supporting the wind industry in Brazil using its worldwide renewable energy consulting and certification expertise.

In 2008, the first semi-submersible platform was entirely built in Brazil to DNV’s class rules, establishing the company as a trusted expert in the deepwater offshore sector.  In 2023, DNV reached a record level of class inspections of ships and platforms along the Brazilian coast. And DNV has established itself as the market share leader for classed offshore service vessels and for container vessels in Brazil.

DNV has also demonstrated its commitment to wider society in Brazil through initiatives such as Dream Learn Work, a non-profit organization created by DNV and other Norwegian companies operating in Rio de Janeiro to offer young Brazilians from less developed areas a chance for a better future through education.

Today, DNV has around 280 employees and nine offices including the major economic hubs such as Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

Remi Eriksen, DNV’s Group President and CEO

"As we begin writing the history of our next 50 years in Brazil, we will help our customers in tackling major transformations within transportation, healthcare, food & beverage, and not least the twin transition of decarbonization and digitalization,” says Remi Eriksen, DNV’s Group President and CEO.  “Going forward, we intend to enlarge our contribution to safeguarding life, property, and the environment in Brazil. As the country has developed, we have been directing our efforts in developing assurance services to navigate transformations in a safe, secure, and efficient way.”

Brazil will play an important role in the global energy transition and DNV is working with stakeholders to identify opportunities. DNV has already mapped the entire Brazilian coast, identifying the most promising locations for the installation of this energy source, and involved in the development of more than 50 GW of offshore wind projects.

Fernanda Ferrer Sarmento, DNV’s Country Chair for Brazil, said, “Brazil has huge potential to thrive in a decarbonizing world.  We at DNV have the global experience and local presence to help the Brazilian market accelerate decarbonization across all sectors."
