Shuttle tankers are used to transport crude oil from offshore oil wells to terminals or refineries where subsea pipelines are not feasible. Unlike traditional tankers, shuttle tankers are equipped with dynamic positioning systems and other advanced technologies which enable them to maintain their positioning and safely load oil in challenging offshore environments.

Approximately 80 shuttle tankers are in operation today, with the majority of these in Brazilian offshore fields and the North Sea.

With newbuild demand for shuttle tankers expected to accelerate over the next five years, some key regulatory, technical, and environmental considerations should be taken by owners and builders.

DNV’s latest white paper on shuttle tankers provides a comprehensive overview of:

  • Special features on shuttle tankers
  • Regulations
  • Environmental/decarbonization
  • Loading systems and procedures
  • Volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions
  • Dynamic positioning
  • Hull design
  • Machinery and systems
  • Nautical safety
  • Fire safety
  • Helicopter deck
  • Cyber security
  • Typical notations
