This white paper presents how ship designs can gain another 2 - 5% fuel efficiency by allowing sterns to be asymmetric. Nönnecke’s idea of asymmetric sterns of the 1960s is combined with high-fidelity CFD, formal parametric optimization and high performance computing. The asymmetric stern serves as a propulsion improving device, without the vibration and fatigue strength concerns that come with fins and nozzles.
