Environmental performance

LNG as fuel can significantly improve the environmental footprint of a vessel:

  • Up to 23% reduction in GHG emissions
  • Up to 80% reduction in NOX emissions
  • Almost eliminates SOx, particulate matter (PM)

NOx emissions are reduced by 20-80%, depending on the engine technology, and with the use of EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) or SCR (Selective Catalytic Reactor) systems NOx Tier III levels can be achieved for all engine types.

Particulate matter emissions are also drastically reduced.

In terms of GHG emissions, taking into account both CO2 and CH4 (methane), the level of reduction depends on the type of engine selected.

Methane slip is higher for 4-stroke engines than for 2-stroke engines and also depends on whether the engines are low or high pressure. High pressure engines typically have considerably lower methane emissions than low pressure designs.Environmental performance 2 stroke engines - Support - article body
