Re-certification of the EEXI
The following table illustrates possible scenarios and its effect on the approved EEXI:
Scenario |
EEXI re-certification mandatory |
EEXI re-certification voluntary |
Ship type change |
yes |
- |
Increase in DWT (by adjustment of maximum summer load draft) |
Depending on applied change and its influence on required EEXI |
yes |
Change of lightweight (without modification of drafts) |
Yes, in case of installation of additional equipment so that DWT decreases and energy efficiency is substantially altered |
Yes, e.g. in case cranes are removed and DWT increases |
Propeller retrofit |
Yes, in case engine power limitation is effected |
yes |
Loss of ice class |
yes |
- |
Installation of energy saving devices (ducts, fins, propeller boss cap fins) |
Yes, in case engine power limitation is effected
|
Yes, in case model test, CFD or new speed trial is available to verify the improvement in energy efficiency |
Bow retrofit |
no |
No, usually only effective for low speed operation below the EEXI relevant power setting |
Installation of air lubrication system |
no |
Yes, in case new comparative trials with ALS ON/OFF are available |
Application of low-friction paint |
Yes, in case engine power limitation is effected
|
Yes, in case new speed trials are available or reevaluation of model test or CFD curves based on hull roughness measurments |
Performance of new speed trials |
Yes, in case engine power limitation is effected |
yes |
Installation of shaft generator |
Yes, in case engine power limitation is effected |
yes |
Installation of batteries |
No |
No, not considered in the EEXI scheme |
Installation of variable frequency pumps, LED light and other optimised electrical consumers |
No |
Yes, in case the electric power table is available and electric power consumption is below standard auxiliary power |
Conversion to alternative fuel |
Yes, in case engine power limitation is effected |
yes |
Installation of wind assisted propulsion system |
no |
yes |
Use of biofuel/biofuel blends or drop-in of carbon neutral fuels |
no |
No, as this measure improves the operational effeciency but not the design efficiency |
Modification of power limitation, e.g. change from mechanical EPL to ShaPoLi |
No, EEXI technical file remains valid but new OMM to be submitted |
no |
Installation of exhaust gas treatment |
no |
No, carbon capture is not integrated into EEXI scheme |
Change of ship name, owner or flag |
No, IMO number is the relevant identification parameter. Can be updated manually in the existing approved EEXI technical file |
yes |
Considering the different scenarios, it is important that you check the applicable scenario for your individual ship. Please reach out to your DNV project manager for clarification or address questions through our DATE portal.
EEXI re-certification process
Complying with the EEXI doesn’t have to be hard work: DNV has created a digital self-service tool to generate the required documentation in case an update of the EEXI certification is needed.
