LIDAR-measured turbulence intensity
Joint Industry Project
DNV runs a Joint Industry Project to use LIDAR turbulence intensity measurements for different applications
Challenge
In wind energy, the measurement of meteorological quantities, such as wind speed and turbulence intensity (TI), is essential. They are used for wind resource assessment, energy production assessment, site assessment, power curve and load validation. Wind speed and TI are typically measured by cup and sonic anemometers located on a met mast. LIDARs (Light detection and ranging) are nowadays often used for wind speed measurement, since they allow remote measurements that can replace (in particularly for offshore applications) cost-intensive met masts. For site assessment, power curve measurement etc. the wind speed measurements using LIDARs are already well established, but not for the TI measurements where a met mast is still additionally used.
Solution
The purpose of the project is to improve this situation and to collect and evaluate the current state-of-the-art and the state of research and to develop recommendations and establish acceptance criteria to use LIDAR TI measurements for different applications, such as site assessment, load validation and power curve measurement.
Benefits
- Develop a Recommended Practice as basis for acceptance of turbulence measurements using LIDAR and propose guidance for TI measurements dependent on different LIDAR technologies available on the market including limitations of their applications
- Decrease the uncertainty in site assessment and load/model validation on- and offshore
Value
- Enable a more precise energy yield assessment
- Reduce the costs of measurement campaigns for site assessment
- Enable measurements in new areas, such as deep-water sites
- Shorten turn-around time for load measurement campaigns for type certification
