Floating Offshore Wind

Commercializing with confidence

The next phase of the energy transition demands committed implementation of new technologies. Floating offshore wind is opening new possibilities for wind power locations and will play a critical role in the transition to a cleaner energy supply, contributing significantly to an increase in offshore wind power. Floating offshore wind capacity is projected to almost 270 GW by 2050, as per DNV's 2023 Energy Transition Outlook (ETO) research.

Following first successful prototypes and demonstration projects, floating offshore wind is now taking the first steps in commercialization. DNV’s ETO 2023 estimates that by 2050, the global average LCOE for floating offshore wind will be at approximately USD 67/MWh, with these cost reductions driven by volume increases, standardization and the advantages of experiential learning.

Global knowledge from key competence centers of DNV

Faced with challenges coming from unknown territory, many new concept designs and market players, the industry needs reassurance that all possible steps have been taken to minimize risks and maximize the chances of a successful project.

DNV enables floating offshore wind commercialization by providing digital tools and guidance to develop safe, reliable and cost competitive projects. With our industry standards, global presence and 160 years' experience in managing risks of offshore technologies we provide stakeholders with the needed confidence to implement the novel floating offshore wind technology around the world.

We have services to support floating offshore wind projects, delivered with experience from offshore wind, maritime and oil & gas.

Joint industry projects

We invest material percentages of our annual revenues in research and development (R&D) including leading JIPs focused on floating offshore wind. The following are JIPs directly supporting the improvement of floating wind development with others in the works.

Optimizing mooring and dynamic cable design requirements for floating wind

The JIP will provide new and vaulable insights on load and capacity of these critical components and the recommendations will form basis for tomorrow’s design requirements.

Ground investigation for floating wind turbines

Focussing on pragmatic approaches to site investigation and ground modelling.

Concrete for Floating Offshore Wind

DNV has secured sufficient interest from industry partners to launch a new joint industry project to enhance technology development and prepare for scale/industrialization of concrete substructures for floating offshore wind.

Floating offshore wind substations

DNV is looking for partners to launch a new Joint Industry Project to enhance technology development for floating offshore substations.
