DNV is working with National Grid to assess the potential for electrification in their gas territories to alleviate grid constraints and work to reduce costs and carbon emissions for customers. This website will provide information and resources on the process of electrifying your home or property. Please use this webpage as a resource to learn what electrification means, the benefits of electrifying, and how you can go about making this change.
Why should I electrify my home?
Electrifying your home has many benefits. Electric-powered appliances and home heating are clean products that reduce reliance on underground/in-wall pipes that need to be maintained/replaced over time. Currently, utility-sponsored clean heating programs provide significant incentives for electric conversions, so taking advantage of those rebates to upgrade your home appliances and heating system can be very advantageous especially if your equipment is reaching end of life. In addition, electrifying your home has environmental benefits for both you and your broader community. Converting to electric energy allows you to reduce your carbon footprint by removing your reliance on fossil fuels. In addition, electrifying your home has direct health and safety benefits by removing emissions from traditional fuel-based heating and appliances.
What does it mean to electrify my home?
Home electrification is the process of replacing fossil-fuel (i.e., natural gas, kerosene, oil, coal) consuming equipment in your home with equipment that runs on electricity. For example, electrification involves replacing equipment that is fossil-fuel fired such as a stove, boiler, furnace, or water heater with high efficiency electric equipment (i.e., induction cooktop, heat pumps, ductless mini-splits, instantaneous water heater, etc.). Traditionally, homes have some combination of electricity, natural gas, or a delivered fuel as the source for space heating, cooking, laundry, and other appliances. With electrification, all of these functions are transitioned to rely solely on electricity.
How do I electrify my home?
Converting your home from delivered fuels or natural gas to electric is not a DIY (Do-It-Yourself) job. Thankfully, your utility and numerous partner contractors are available to help. National Grid can assist you with this transition when you reach out to NPA@NationalGrid.com.
The process to electrify your home depends on the elements within your home that need to be transitioned. These can include the replacement of a heating system with heat pumps, changing out a water heater, or swapping your gas stove for an electric one. In addition, you may want to consider weatherization of your home prior to installing new heating and cooling equipment. To learn more about each option, click on the links below.
