DNV provides Fleet Electrification Advice to Norwegian transport authority, Ruter

DNV is assisting Ruter in decarbonizing its fleet of 1,100 transit buses and supporting decision-making regarding bus charging and hydrogen fuelling infrastructure.

About the customer

DNV is assisting Ruter, the public transport authority for Oslo and Akershus counties in Norway, in decarbonizing its fleet of 1,100 transit buses (shifting to battery-electric buses and hydrogen buses) and supporting decision-making regarding bus charging and hydrogen fuelling infrastructure.

The customer challenge

For the battery-electric buses, Ruter’s plans include five bus depots and end stations with fast charging pantographs at all locations (300-600 kW each) as well as slow charging plugs at the depots (50 kW each).

DNV’s solution

DNV is responsible for project management, planning, stakeholder management, risk analyses, and cost studies with uncertainty analyses for these locations. We have assisted the company with multiple grant applications for charging infrastructure by providing detailed cost calculations, workshops and dialogue with the grant authorities, and decision support for Ruter’s Board of Directors.

Finally, with regard to the battery-electric buses, we are assisting Ruter with optimization strategies for the bus routes and for bus charging to yield the lowest total cost of ownership and operation. For the hydrogen buses, we have provided detailed assessments of available technologies and their total costs of ownership along with market analyses, strategies development, and business model development related to private hydrogen filling stations (for Ruter’s exclusive use) as well as both private and public multi-use filling stations (to be used by Ruter’s buses, other heavy transport, ferries and ships, and private cars).
