Testing of Residential and Commercial End-Use Equipment for Compatibility with Hydrogen Blended Gas
Joint Industry Project
This joint industry project is to determine the effect of hydrogen blending on the safety and reliability of end use equipment installed in North America.
The injection of low carbon hydrogen into existing gas infrastructure is one of the most attractive alternatives for reducing carbon outputs while the industry works on decarbonizing domestic and commercial end-use equipment. In order to ensure the safety and reliability of residential and commercial end use equipment, DNV performs laboratory testing of appliances using hydrogen blended gas.
Challenge
It is well known that the combustion properties of hydrogen differ substantially from those of natural gas. This can result in the changing performance of end-use equipment when hydrogen is blended into natural gas, including burner overheating, flashback, and engine knock. To ensure the safe and reliable performance of residential and commercial appliances connected to the gas network, it is important to determine the maximum allowable hydrogen percentage in natural gas.
The natural gas utilization equipment installed in the field is diverse, for example gas engines, and residential and commercial burner systems of different purpose, design, adjustment, and maintenance history are installed across the distribution areas in North America. Analysis performed by DNV and others shows that the different types of combustion equipment can have significantly different sensitivity to hydrogen.
