Interview with Lora Anguay, Chief Zero Carbon Officer, SMUD, and Jarred Metoyer, SVP, DNV, on concrete actions both companies are taking to fulfill the goal of just energy transition by 2030.
Collectively, we will not be able to hit our Net Zero decarbonization goals unless North America and others reach carbon negative by 2050. At the federal levels, we have buy-in from the top and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that will offer a flood of funding and help create necessary infrastructure across several sectors. But if we don’t maintain an equity lens throughout the entire endeavor, then we’re going to further widen the gaps of inequality across communities. Join us as we interview DNV’s Jarred Metoyer and Lora Anguay, SMUD’s Chief Zero Carbon Officer as we discuss the practicalities of the Equitable Energy Transition and more.
1. There was a sense of urgency at this year’s COP26 as it became evident that if we continue as if it’s business as usual, we aren’t going to be able to keep temperatures from rising more than 1.5℃ by 2050. The need to accelerate the Energy Transition is upon us, can you speak more to how exactly the transition is being accelerated?
2. What does it mean to reach carbon negative? How do you envision we get there in time?
3. Equity has been top of mind, particularly in the past two years as COVID-19 has exacerbated existing challenges. What does it mean in the context of the Energy Transition?
4. What are some challenges that aren’t often discussed, but are actually huge stumbling blocks for those pursuing decarbonization?
5. A large part of decarbonization goals is the increase in EV infrastructure and EVs on the road. But, how do we make that transition when we already have huge inequities in mobility and transportation?
6. Who do you think is doing this transition the right way? In terms of equity, as well as decarbonization?
7. Are we thinking big enough? What big ideas could change things that no organization has dared to try yet?
