Hydrogen embrittlement of Nickel-based alloys

HISCinNi: a DNV Joint Industry Project

Developing practical guidelines for the use of Nickel-based alloys for subsea applications.

Challenge

There have been several reported failures in Nickel-based components in critical subsea applications the recent years (e.g., Alloy 716, Alloy 725, Alloy 625 grade 1, and Alloy 718).

Objective

To develop practical guidelines for use of Ni-based alloys for subsea applications.

Benefits/Deliverable

The aim of the HISCinNi JIP is to provide the industry with practical guidance related to design, installation, and operation of subsea components in Ni-based alloys. The focus will be on connecting material HISC resistance, load, and geometry in a similar  manner as in the design code DNV-RP-F112.

Project details

DNV manages the project and the following participants take part:

  • Equinor
  • Vår Energi
  • Aker BP
  • Gassco
  • OKEA
  • Wintershall Dea
  • Aker Solutions
  • Baker Hughes
  • Technip FMC
  • Subsea Design
  • Sval
  • voestalpine BÖHLER Edelstahl GmbH & Co KG
  • Havtil.

Project status

The JIP was kicked off in December 2022 and will be concluded in the end of 2024.
