Joint Industry Project

DNV invites the industry to collaborate to de-risk non-metallic seals and flow coating for CO2 pipeline transport.

Challenge

There are evident gaps between the general understanding of non-metallic materials’ performance in CO2 and the specific performance and needs for CO2 pipeline conditions.

With the current plans to re-purpose hydrocarbon pipelines for CO2, knowing the criticality of CO2 pipeline conditions for non-metallic seals and flow coating, will reduce or remove risks of identified failure mechanisms. Knowledge and general reduction of risks is essential as the possibilities for testing may be limited. For new CO2 pipelines the closing of gaps and proposing of relevant requirements, is seeking to simplify qualification efforts for non-metallic seals and flow coating and thus reduce costs.

Solution

DNV proposes to establish a JIP to execute a tailored test program to:

  • Determine the criticality of CO2 pipeline conditions for non-metallic seals and flow coating, and the possibility for detrimental effects
  • Remove or reduce risks of identified failure mechanisms for an envelope of conditions.

The test program will include tailored decompression testing, testing of short and long-term effects of CO2 exposure and effects of relevant contaminants. ​A guideline will be developed with recommendations for material selection and qualification for CO2 pipelines, repurposed or new, dense or gas phase.

The JIP is based on work performed in WP11 Non-metallics of JIP CO2SafePipe.
