Amanda: An engineer driven by icy winds and determination

Celebrating International Women in Engineering Day

On International Women in Engineering Day (INWED, 23 June) DNV celebrates all engineers who are passionate about accelerating the energy transition.

One of many female engineers working at DNV is Amanda Ryan. Amanda is a Senior Engineer working for DNV’s Renewables Certification business. As we celebrate her achievements, we also celebrate the countless women who continue to shape the engineering landscape.

From cold climates to wind energy

Amanda completed both her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Civil Engineering at Memorial University, nestled on the rugged east coast of Canada in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. Her academic focus was on coastal and offshore structures, particularly in the challenging context of cold climates. Growing up on an island in the Atlantic Ocean, she was continually influenced by the surrounding energy infrastructure and offshore engineering projects. The icy winds and waters that swept across the coastline fuelled her curiosity and determination.

The unseen fulfilment

When asked about the most fulfilling aspects of her engineering career, Amanda reflects on the opportunities it has afforded her. “Moving around is hard,” she admits, “but it has allowed me to work with incredible colleagues on fascinating projects.” Her work has taken her to different cities and countries, broadening her horizons and enriching her experiences. The tangible impact of her contributions in wind energy—whether it’s ensuring structural integrity, or enhancing safety protocols—fuels her sense of purpose.

DNV: Where challenges meet growth

As a Senior Engineer at DNV’s Renewables Certification business, Amanda plays a pivotal role in the concrete structures section. Her expertise lies in certifying concrete structures and grouted connections. Drawing from her background in cold climates and sea ice, she actively reviews sea ice conditions assessments and loading for offshore structures. Beyond technical work, she manages projects and collaborates on offshore wind initiatives in the United States.

What sets the work at DNV apart for Amanda? “The ability to grow within multiple disciplines,” she says. “Every day presents new challenges, but it’s never boring.” DNV’s commitment to renewable energy projects on a global scale aligns perfectly with her vision for a sustainable future.

Empowering the next generation

To young women considering engineering careers, Amanda offers sage advice: “Be open to experiences and support each other.” She emphasizes the importance of mentorship, networking, and breaking down barriers.
