Alleviating Challenges from Earthquakes for wind farms
Joint Industry Project
ACE 2: Evolution
Challenge
Alleviating Challenges from Earthquakes (ACE) for wind farms is based on customer feedback from the ACE 1 JIP and the published DNV-RP-0585 “Seismic design for wind power plants”. Topics referred to are:
- Damping
- Taiwanese and Japanese standards
- Seismic analysis
Solution
Damping
Soil damping will be addressed by means of a desk study on available literature and existing methods. We will take a closer look at soil material and radiation damping and the dependency of soil damping on loading and site characteristics. This will be the basis for the implementation of soil damping in the wind turbine analysis.
Taiwanese and Japanese standards
There is a need for further clarification and defining of specific requirements for Taiwanese and Japanese standards by the evaluation of applying horizontal seismic motions in two directions and other specific requirements.
Seismic analysis
The project will work on the seismic clustering approach to define is this is allowed, and if so, what are the requirements and can seismic clustering be combined with conventional clustering.
Deliverables
DNV-RP-0585 “Seismic design for wind power plants” contains guidance for both integrated analysis as well as super-element approach. The JIP provides a state-of-the-art review and indicated needs for further detailed research and optimization. ACE 2, as a follow up of the ACE 1 JIP will lead to an upgrade of the DNV-RP-0585 recommended practice.
