Increasing energy storage - New car sales - Lithium-ion technology


Almost all the 400 senior energy executives DNV surveyed (89%) believe that rapidly increasing energy storage will be crucial to keeping their country/region on track to meet its Net Zero targets.

In 2022, 14% of all new car sales globally were EVs, a significant increase from 9% in 2021 and under 5% in 2020. It is not surprising then that 72% of those DNV surveyed reported that their country is not building electric vehicle charging infrastructure fast enough.

Lithium-ion technology is expected to dominate EVs energy storage in the short- to medium-term. It is also by far the most popular technology among DNV’s 400 survey respondents, with 56% reporting that their organization will increase investment/focus levels on this technology in the year ahead, far ahead of second place at 32%. Second place was a tie between sodium-ion technology and thermal energy storage.
