The President and Chief Executive Officer is the foundation’s top manager, reporting to the DNV Board of Directors.

The President and Chief Executive Officer is appointed by the Board of Directors. Henrik O. Madsen was appointed President and CEO in May 2006.
The CEO is responsible for the day-to-day management of the organisation. The CEO is not a member of the Board, but attends all Board meetings.
The DNV Executive Board
The Executive Board is the CEO's most important management tool. It is the principal management group responsible for strategy development and allocation of the foundation’s resources.
The Executive Board meets about once a month, dealing with strategic issues, budgeting and planning.
The CEO has also regular business review meetings with the COOs. Business area staff members also participate, discussing performance compared to operational plans and follow-up issues.
DNV's Business Areas
DNV’s business is divided into four distinct business areas:
- DNV Maritime
- DNV Energy
- DNV Industry
- DNV IT Global Services
The four Chief Operating Officers (COO) are responsible for the operations of their individual business areas and report to the CEO.
Within each business area, regional managers are responsible for their individual defined regions.

Senior Management Group
Once a year, about 60 senior managers gather to take part in a Senior Management Group meeting. Corporate issues related to strategy and leadership are on the agenda. In addition the managers have on these occasions the opportunity to build personal relationships across business areas and geographical borders.
Country Chair
In addition to the regional managers, a number of Country Chairs (CC) have been appointed. They are the most senior DNV representatives within a geographical area and act as the CEO’s local representatives across business area boundaries.
Each CC is responsible for coordinating administrative functions and ensuring that synergy effects are exploited for the benefit of DNV as a whole.
